Derry Credit Union have unveiled a new Prepaid Debit Card offering members an alternative to conventional credit cards.

The card, which is available to all members of the credit union over the age of 16, will provide the convenience and security of paying by card, without the risk of getting into debt, or incurring hefty interest charges.

Those registering for a card will have more choice in how they shop – online, by phone, or in-store. Members who have not before had the benefit of debit cards will now have access to a prepaid card, which can help them budget - they can only spend what they have, as funds must be loaded onto their card before use – similar to a pay-as-you-go mobile phone. It is a much safer way to carry funds, and can be used anywhere that accepts Visa card payments.

Seamus McAnee, PRO, of Derry Credit Union Ltd explained: “A recent survey carried out by the Irish League of Credit Unions highlighted a significant appetite for new and innovative products and services from credit unions. Credit unions have always specialised in delivering simple savings and loans products, but there is growing demand from members with an increasing need for electronic and online offerings.

“Our Prepaid Debit Card can meet that demand, in offering our members the facility to purchase goods online, by phone, and when travelling abroad. Cards can be loaded with money at the counter, or over the phone. Members can only spend what they load on to the card; there are no monthly bills, and no hefty interest rates.”

He continued: “These cards complement the on-going work of credit unions in helping their members’ budget wisely, and borrow sensibly, providing an excellent alternative to credit cards, and the steep interest rates they incur. They also provide access to electronic payments for the unbanked in our community, and for those whose poor credit history would prevent them from obtaining a credit card or debit card tied to a bank account,” Mr McAnee added.

All members of Credit Union Ltd over 16 years of age can receive their Prepaid Debit Card on the same day, and save themselves time, money and hassle. The card will be ideal for shopping online, taking on holiday, or for making telephone payments. Cards also have a cash-back facility, available in all participating retail outlets, meaning you skip the ATM queues too!
