Members of the public are being asked to avoid attending Letterkenny General Hospital’s Emergency Department today.
In a statement, Sean Murphy, the hospital’s general manager, said the emergency department was “extremely busy” with “above average numbers” of “very ill” patients requring admission.
He added: “The public are asked to avoid attending the Emergency Department if possible and to contact their GP or GP Out of Hours services in the first instance.”
Non-emergency cases attending the Emergency Department will experience lengthy delays today.
Mr Murphy said the hospital regretted any inconvenience to patients and their families and “is taking all steps to deal with the situation.”
