SDLP Foyle MLA has lambasted the Department of Regional Development for what he calls ‘a maddening dereliction of strategic duty’ to Derry in implementing significant developments of infrastructure
Mr Ramsey received information from the Minister regarding the Department’s work as part of the implementation of the One Plan for the city.
The Foyle MLA said: “I am appalled at the record of what DRD deem to be progress in terms of infrastructure and transport in our city. I asked the Minister to outline his Department’s actions in relation to the One Plan after news that Belfast is to get a Rapid Transit System which has not begun operation.
“As part of the Minister’s response, I was informed about the upgrade of the Derry-Coleraine railway which will not be finished until 2016, the stalled A5 and A6 projects, a new hub in the old Waterside Station for which no funding is yet available, and a number of traffic calming schemes in the city.
“That is not real progress on matters of great importance in the development of infrastructure for our city, when we are seeing over £30m of investment in faster buses for Belfast as well as new train routes. It is time Derry as the second city of this region was taken seriously and the Executive realised that the One Plan is a document which the SDLP will see implemented at all costs.”
