A Derry record store is gearing up to celebrate ‘International Record Store Day’ which falls this weekend.
Cool Discos Proprietor, Lee Mason who has been in business in Derry for more than 20 years has a number of special events lined up for tomorrow..
As well as a number of spot prizes on offer, a number of Derry’s hottest bands will be in the store performing live.
There will also be a number of very limited releases pressed especially for International Record Store Day, in various colours of vinyl.
Speaking to the ‘Journal’ Lee Mason said: “Basically it is everything the vinyl junkie needs but you’ll need to be up early to have a chance of getting your hands on any of the specially printed vinyl releases.”
It has been another challenging year for Cool Discs. They recently became not just the city’s only local Independent record store, but the city’s only record store.
Lee said: “I have been interviewed about HMV closing many times and it is not a good thing that they closed.
It is never good when people lose their jobs.
“I’m still here though, as I was still here after Virgin and Woolworths closed.
“The secret to that is that we are very competitive in our prices.” Lee added.
“We have ordered nearly every title available on the specially printed releases, we know we will not get the lot, simply because these titles are so limited.
And as for tomorrow’s celebration Lee says: “It’s a great day and people meet people they haven’t seen in years, but that is exactly what Record Store Day is all about, a gathering of like minded people who just love music and the craic that goes with it.
“This is always one of our busiest days of the year and the big draw of course is the live music.
“This year the line up is pretty special both in the shop and around the corner in Sandinos.”
Cool Discs will be celebrating the seventh annual International Record Store Day day with lots of give aways and live music from Derry’s finest bands and musicians.
This year the store’s line up is pretty special - including performances from Strength, Clameens, Sullivan and Gold, Our Krypton Son and Little Bear.
A number of acts will also take to the stage in Sandinos including The Woodburning Savages, The Gatefolds, John Deery and the Heads, Conor McAteer and Autumn.
