Republic supporters to pay tribute to tragic Northern Ireland fan

Republic of Ireland fans are planning a tribute to Northern Ireland fan, Darren Rodgers, who died tragically in France at the weekend.

It is believed the Republic of Ireland fans will hold a minute’s applause in honour of 24 year-old Rodgers in the 24th minute of Tuesday’s game against Sweden.

Northern Ireland fans are expected to do the same during their game against Ukraine on Thursday.

It is believed Darren Rodgers, who was from Ballymena, was alone when he fell eight metres from a promenade onto to a rocky beach in Nice in the early hours of Monday morning.

First Minister, Arlene Foster and deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness expressed their deep condolences at the death of Darren Rodgers.”

“It was with great shock and sadness we learned this morning of the death of Darren Rodgers in Nice last night as the result of a tragic accident.

“The loss of a young life in these circumstances is truly heart breaking and our thoughts and prayers are with his friends and family at this extremely difficult time,” said the Ministers in a joint statement.

“This sad news is in stark contrast to the jovial carnival atmosphere just hours before at the game against Poland. Our fans have been fine ambassadors for the place we all call home and we encourage everyone to keep safe.”
