Republican commemorations

Republicans in Derry are preparing for a series of major commemoration events in the city next week.

Thursday marks the 40th anniversary of the death of Eamonn Lafferty, the first IRA man to be killed by the British army in Derry, and next Sunday will be the 30th anniversary of the death of INLA hunger striker Mickey Devine.

The commemoration events will include a lecture by Martin McGuinness in Creggan on Thursday August 18th and a question answers session with former IRA commanders within Long Kesh; Bobby Storey, Laurence McKeown, and Raymond McCartney on Saturday August 20th.

The national hunger strike exhibition will also be held in the Guildhall during the commemorations.
