Revealed: Accidents among council workers

There was almost ten months' worth of lost work days among Derry & Strabane Council employees last year due to accidents.

A total of 289 days were lost in 2015 following accidents across a range of sites.

Most of this was down to a road traffic collision in the Waterside, while other incidents included trips and falls across a range of sites.

A report on the number of accidents and incidents for the period for the three month period to December 15, 2015 and for the wider year was brought before the Council’s Assurance, Audit & Risk Committee on Thursday at the Guildhall.

The report details that there 48 episodes, 13 involving staff and the other 35 involving members of the public over the three months.

Of the 48 episodes, three employee Reporting Of Injuries, Disease and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations (RIDDOR) incidents were reported to the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland, resulting in 32 days absence from work.

There was also a further three involving members of the public.

The report states that while the overall trend in terms of RIDDORs for the Council had decreased, the cost to council in terms of days lost had increased.

In monetary terms, the cost in lost days to council throughout 2015 was £19,851.15.

A total of 214 days work were lost after an accident involving a moving vehicle on Victoria Road.

There were 22 days lost due to people who slipped, tripped or fell at Brandywell Civic Amenity site, Altnagelvin Cemetery, and a further five for the same reason at the City Baths, and four more Altnagelvin Cemetery.

There were 20 days off work due to over stretching at the Strahans Road Depot, and 22 more days lost, due to illness, at the Guildhall.
