Petrol bombs were thrown at police in the Creggan estate last night as the area suffered its second successive night of violence.

A sustained period of rioting took place in the Creggan Heights area as police moved in and evacuated some homes in the area in the wake of a suspected dissident republican mortar attack against them on Sunday evening.

One Councillor, Gary Donnelly said that “anger was palpable” amongst residents that it had taken the police so long to move in an estimated 13 hours after the bomb attack.

One resident, who did not wish to be named, estimated that at one stage last night up to 100 youths took part in the rioting last night.
