The PSNI in East Derry have said all roads in the Drumsurn area have now reopened following a security alert.

A number of families evacuated from houses in in the area due to the alert have returned to their homes yesterday.

The move to evacuate five homes in the Legavallon Road/Peters Road area followed an anonymous call to a charity earlier this week claiming that a device had been left in the Legavallon Road area, known locally as ‘The Pot’.

The male caller said he represented the republican community and said the device had been there for several days.

Sinn Fein councillor Brenda Chivers said: ‘It’s disgraceful this is happening in this day and age. For the families involved it was stressful. The families I spoke with were upset and frightened. We all thought we were past those days.”
