Sadness at passing of Derry man Johnny Campbell

The death has taken place in England of well-known Derry native, Johnny Campbell.

Johnny died suddenly on Saturday past, November 16, at the grand old age of 93 years-old after a long and fruitful life. His funeral takes place in Derby next Friday, November 29.

Known to many locally for his sharp wit and creative mind, he was an occasional contributor to the ‘Derry Journal’ and penned some great features in recent years, including a reflection on Derry’s old picture-houses and on his early years growing up in Top of the Hill.

Johnny, husband of the late Jenny Campbell (nee Doherty), is formerly from Creggan Heights and was a much loved father to Anna, Jean, Susie, the late Pat (Soup), John, Gerry and Paul. He also leaves behind dozens of grandchildren - including ‘Journal’ reporter Julieann Campbell - and many great-grandchildren.

He will be sorely missed by his family here in Derry, in England, America and China. Johnny spent the last few years of his life writing a remarkable memoir and so through his words, he’ll live forever.
