SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has said he was delighted to see posters on the London Tube this week showcasing crew members of the 2013-14 Derry-Londonderry-Doire Clipper Round the World Race – as part of a recruitment drive for the 2015-16 race which starts in August.
He said: “Seeing these recruitment posters in the London Tube (on my way to Westminster this week) brought back really fond memories of sharing in the delight and excitement last year of the DLD boat coming into Derry as victors in the transatlantic leg.
“This was a fantastic achievement by the crew on top of all the impressive efforts throughout the race.
“It also reminded me of speaking with the organiser of the race, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, about his admiration for how Derry has taken the Clipper Race to its heart and celebrates it better than anyone else.
“The buzz, the atmosphere and the warmth of welcome that all of the clipper crews receive when they arrive in Derry is a credit to the whole city and adds again to our visitor reputation.
“Indeed, if anyone’s New Year resolution is to start anew and do something life-changing in 2015, then what could be better than the ultimate challenge of racing the world’s oceans?”
