SDLP Foyle MP Mark Durkan has welcomed today’s announcement by the Irish government that they are to ban the use of sunbeds for under-18s (from the end of next month).

Mr Durkan, who has consistently lobbied at Westminster for the introduction of similar legislation, said: “I strongly welcome today’s announcement by the Irish Minister for Health Dr James Reilly, and his commendable efforts to tackle the growing numbers of young people who are developing skin cancer.

“The scientific evidence is clear - sunbeds increase the risk of getting skin cancer. Indeed, there is no doubt that children and young people – particularly girls – suffer skin damage as a result of sunbed use.

“Skin cancer is also one of the fastest growing cancers throughout these islands – and Northern Ireland is no exception. We therefore need the introduction of legislation in every jurisdiction to protect our children and young people from the dangers of sunbeds and help buck this worrying trend.”
