A SDLP Councillor has said that the gates on Lowry’s Lane will be closed from 8pm on weekend nights for the forseeable future following another bout of anti-social behaviour in the area.
The decision has been taken Councillor Cusack, PSNI and Community Safety Wardens after a large crowd of youths gathering along the areas of the Glen, Hatmore and Kylemore.
Councillor Cusack stated: “It is unfortunate that this action has to be taken but my primary concern is the peace and safety of the residents and families in the area. Having openly monitored and engaged with the crowd last night it was evident that many , some as young as 13 years of age, were not from the area so obviously are being led to believe this is a comfortable safe area to gather and drink. I will not allow this to happen.’
“This decision will inconvenience many walkers and some residents which is unfortunate, however I doubt if anyone would be comfortable and safe walking through this scenario otherwise.’
“The gates will be open in plenty of time for early morning until this issue is resolved. While the wardens, police and community reps can only do so much I would yet again urge parents to question where their children are, who they are with and what they are doing. Their safety in these situations is always at risk.”
