SDLP MLA says '˜digital divide' in the North West must end

SDLP East Derry MLA Gerry Mullan has challenged the Economy Minister to 'up his game' and 'end the digital divide' he claims acts as a barrier to investment in the North West.

Mr. Mullan raised the delivery of high speed, reliable broadband to homes and businesses in the North West in the Assembly this week.

“Investment in physical and digital infrastructure in the North West has been sorely lacking for decades. The end result of that is high unemployment, low investment and inferior services for people living here. In spite of Project Kelvin, the £28 million fibre optic cable connecting us to North America, over 10 per cent of internet connections here are slower than 2 megabytes per second. That poses serious problems for basic household internet access, never mind for business use.”
