SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey is urging people in Derry and across the North West to support an awareness campaign warning of the dangers of drinking during pregnancy.

The Bogside and Brandywell Health Forum’s ‘Drink Think’ project aims to reduce the number of expectant mothers drinking alcohol, and believes the official message from the Department of Health is that alcohol should not be consumed during pregnancy.

Mr Ramsey was speaking as the group brought their campaign to Stormont yesterday (Tuesday 9 September). He agrees with the health pressure group there are mixed messages being given to expectant mothers from the various health authorities.

“It is vital that a single, consistent message is sent out to all mums-to-be that drinking during pregnancy is dangerous,” said Mr Ramsey.

“The overall aim of this campaign is to ensure mums give birth to healthy babies. Drinking alcohol during pregnancy is irresponsible and too risky. Any moves being made to get that message out there must be supported, and I will do what I can to support the campaign and spread awareness about such a significant issue.”
