SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has welcomed the commitment of Health Minister Jim Wells to securing funding for the new radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin ahead of a 2016 opening.
Mr Ramsey also welcomed an allocation of £8.5million to voluntary and community sector service provision, including the Family Fund.
He said: “I was very pleased to hear that the new Health Minister has again committed himself to the delivery of the new radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin. This is an issue that lies close to my heart, and indeed so many others, and I have campaigned tirelessly to see the project delivered in the face of cuts.
“The people of the north West deserve a state of the art facility. It would be unacceptable to continue to force those dealing with the trauma of illness to travel to Belfast, compounding their situation.
“I also want to welcome the allocation of new monies to the Family Fund. The fund is hugely supportive of those who otherwise wouldn’t receive the help they need. I know it has been a lifeline for parents with disabled children and it is right that we continue to ensure their needs are met.
“The uncertainty around the fund has led to a large backlog and I hope that this can be dealt with as soon as possible. I would advise anyone in need of such support to contact the fund administrators as soon as possible.
“As we enter a period of tightening public finances, I will fight to ensure that these vital public services are maintained and enhanced to support those most in need.”
