SDLP Derry City councillor Brian Tierney has condemned what he described as a vicious attack on a man in the Leafair Gardens area of the city last night.
Cllr Tierney said: “This appears to have been a vicious attack on a 26 year old man late last night. A gang of men armed with baseball bats broke into his home in Leafair gardens and proceeded to give him a severe beating.
“There is no place for this kind of violence in our city. It’s totally unnecessary and unwanted by the vast majority of people here.
“Brutal attacks like this only undermine the great progress that we’re making as a city toward reconciliation and creating a shared society. I would encourage anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area last night to get in touch with police as soon as possible.”
Meanwhile police in Derry have released statement treating the incident as a case of aggravated burglary.
The statement said: Detectives are appealing for information following an aggravated burglary that occurred in the Leafair Gardens area of Derry last night, Friday, September 12.
Detective Inspector Craig said: “Shortly after 11pm, it is reported that a number of masked males forced their way into a house in the area and assaulted a 26 year old male inside with baseball bats. The man was taken to hospital for treatment to his injuries which are not believed to be life threatening.
“I would appeal to anyone with any information about this incident to contact CID in Strand Road Police Station on the non emergency number 101. Or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details, they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
