A search operation will get underway again this morning for a teenage boy feared drowned in a disused quarry in Strabane.

The teenager, named locally as sixteen year old Rhys Jack, had been among a group of males who were swimming in the quarry yesterday evening.

Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 6.30pm after a report that a man was in distress and had gone under the water.

The search gets underway again at 11am.

SDLP councillor Patsy Kelly said the town was “shocked and numbed”.

“It’s tragic, absolutely tragic and my thoughts go out to the young man’s family,” he said.

“We’ll just have to hope that he can be found soon to bring some closure and comfort to his family.”
