A second Derry take away has been damaged by fire in the city centre.

Papa Busty’s pizzeria, which only opened last month in the middle of Waterloo Street, was partially gutted in the accidental fire.

It is understood a young Derry man and his partner had returned from England to start the business recently.

The fire broke out on Monday afternoon, with the Fire & Rescue Service called to the scene at 4.29pm.

A spokeswoman for the Fire & Rescue Service said two appliances from Northland Fire Station, two from Crescent Link Fire Station and two more from Strabane Fire Station were tasked to the scene.

“Fire crews dealt with a well-developed fire in a café of a ground floor end terrace building,” she said.

“Flats on the first and second floor were evacuated. The incident was dealt with at 6.02pm.”

She also confirmed the fire was being treated as “accidental ignition”.

It is understood no-one was injured in the blaze.

The fire came just a day after Rainbow Chinese Takeaway on Carlisle Road was gutted in another accidental fire.

The chef at Rainbow sustained injuries to his hands and neck but and was treated in hospital on Sunday before being discharged.
