Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Raymond McCartney has called for the immediate release of Brendan Lillis on humanitarian grounds so he can avail of medical treatment in a hospital setting surrounded by his family.
Raymond McCartney made his comments in the village of Park on Friday night as hundreds of people gathered to remember the 30th anniversary of the death of hunger striker Kevin Lynch.
“Today a Sinn Féin delegation visited Brendan Lillis. Since the last visit Brendan Lillis condition has clearly deteriorated. He is not lucid and is clearly physically and mentally exhausted by his experience,” he said.
“This is absolutely no way to keep a seriously-ill man and we are reiterating out call for his release.
“The Justice Minister, David Ford, on Wednesday stated he was seeking legal advice on this case. He needs to prioritise this as a matter of urgency as Brendan Lillis is seriously ill. He should be released immediately on humanitarian grounds as clearly he is no danger to the public.”
