Vandals who dumped dog excrement into a children’s playpark have been branded “sickos”.
The recently opened playpark near Ederowen Park in Galliagh has been inundated with rubbish during recent weeks but the latest dumping of dog foul over the fence at night has prompted an angry backlash.
SDLP Derry City Councillor Shaun Gallagher said the latest dumping incidents have put the eyesight of local children at serious risk as dog excrement can carry a parasite that causes blindness.
“It takes a sick mind to put children’s eyesight at risk at a children’s playpark,” he said.
“In the 20 years I have been a Greater Shantallow representative I have never come across a more shocking story than this.”
The nighttime dumping, which Colr Gallagher believes is part of a campaign by an “individual or individuals” to have the playpark closed, began a couple of months ago with potato skins and later shredded paper being thrown over the security fencing.
“We have been aware of this for a couple of months. It started with potato skins. Somebody is determined to have this valuable community facility closed.
Mothers, who have been visiting the park with their children, have been clearing up the mess themselves but now it has taken a new, sick twist.
“But the most shocking thing is where individuals have started firing dog dirt into a children’s park and we know if you put a child in contact with dog dirt there’s a serious risk of that child being blinded. There’s no way the park can be opened with dog dirt flung all over it.”
Colr Gallagher appealed to anyone who knows anything about the “sickos” behind the campaign to pass information to him or the PSNI.
