Alzheimer’s Society supporters in Foyle are getting ready for this year’s Memory Walk Foyle which will take place on Sunday 15th September and plans are already afoot for a real day to remember!

Ebrington Square will host the day’s activities including a 1-mile Fun walk through St Columb’s Park plus a new 10k Challenge walk across the Foyle Bridge and Peace Bridge. There will also be lots of entertainment, refreshments and music to keep everyone entertained. Registration at The Old Stables, Ebrington Square opens at 1pm with the walk starting at 2pm.

Alzheimer’s Society Community Fundraiser Heather Lundy revealed that more than 200 walkers took part in the Memory Walk Foyle last year raising a fantastic £4,290.

“Last year was a fantastic day with good weather, thank you so much to all those who supported us so generously”, said Heather. This year there will be lots of entertainments, refreshments and plenty for all the family to do – plus in response to local feedback we have added a 10k Challenge Walk. There really is something for everyone and we very much look forward to seeing you all again this year!”

There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK, with 19,000 living in Northern Ireland. This number is set to rise across the UK to one million by 2021; it is the greatest challenge of our generation.

The Alzheimer’s Society supports people affected by dementia in a number of ways, through one-to-one support, information programmes, activity groups/dementia cafés, befriending and advocacy services across the North.

In Foyle anyone living with dementia, their family or carers can access information and support through the Alzheimer’s Society Dementia Support Service based at Sevenoaks. Alzheimer’s Society Foyle also offers a Home Support Service providing vital respite opportunities plus an Advocacy service to ensure the wishes of the person with dementia are heard in decisions about their care.
