The custody suite at Strand Road police station had to be closed yesterday after it became infested with silverfish.

A PSNI spokesperson confirmed to DerryJournal.com that the holding area was closed for a short time on Monday evening.

“The custody suite at Strand Road police station was closed for short time on Monday in order to deal with the issue of silverfish.

“The custody suite was closed for a short time and is now fully operational again.”

DerryJournal.com understands some people who were arrested yesterday had to be taken to other custody suites outside of the city.

Silverfish are small wingless insects and are also nocturnal. They have long antennae, and move in a wiggling motion that resembles the movement of a fish.

Silverfish are considered household pests, due to their consumption and destruction of property. However, although they are responsible for the contamination of food and other types of damage, they do not transmit disease.
