Sinn Féin’s Barney O’Hagan was chosen to replace Maeve McLaughlin on Derry City Council at a convention in the city last night.
Mr O’Hagan, who previously served a term on Derry City Council, will replace Ms McLaughlin, who has become an MLA, in the Northland ward.
He was unanimously selected at a Sinn Féin convention held in the party’s Rath Mór offices.
Mr O’Hagan said he is looking forward to returning to the Council benches. “As well as serving a previous term on Derry City Council, I have been the co-ordinator of the Sinn Féin council group so I have a good understanding of the issues at hand and I am looking forward to getting started.
“This is an exciting time in politics in Derry in terms of the Review of Public Administration and as we prepare for 2013 in terms of delivering an exciting programme of events for the city,” he said.
Foyle MLA Maeve McLaughlin congratulated Mr O’Hagan on his selection. “I have no doubt that Barney’s attention to detail will be an asset to our project,” she said.
