Sinn Fein councillor Sean McGlinchey has been released unconditionally by police investigating paramilitary activity in the Dungiven area.

Colr. Sean McGlinchey (59) was arrested around 8am on Tuesday at his home in Dungiven which was subsequently searched by detectives from the PSNI’s Serious Crime Branch. The former mayor of Limavady was taken to Antrim Serious Crime Suite for questioning from where he was released after 10pm.

Colr. McGlinchey’s arrest was the seventh by police investigating paramilitary activity in the Dungiven area in recent days. Four of five men previously arrested by police in the investigation have been released unconditionally, while one man has been reported to the PPS.

Detective Chief Inspector Una Jennings, from Serious Crime Branch, said: “We are investigating various forms of paramilitary activity in the Dungiven area, predominantly over the last four years. These include shooting incidents and threats.”
