Sinn Féin to select replacement MLA

The Sinn Féin leader on Derry City Council, Councillor Maeve McLaughlin, is set to be selected to replace Martina Anderson as MLA for Foyle.

A selection convention to find a replacement for Ms Anderson, who will become an MEP, will take place in Rafters, Northland Road this Thursday June 7 at 7.30pm.

The party remained tight-lipped yesterday about the replacement MLA but senior party sources indicated that colr. McLaughlin would be selected.

Councillor McLaughlin was elected to Derry City Council in 2001 and has served the Northland Ward in since then.

Colr McLaughlin is also involved in community work and is currently manager of Glen Development Initiative (GDI). The NUI Galway graduate received a BA honours Degree in Sociology, History and Politics and was active in politics during her time at University.

The incoming MLA is also spokesperson for tourism, a member of the local District Policing Partnership and spokesperson on the North West Region Cross Border Groupa
