Sports Minister Carál Ni Chuilin has entered into a war of words with SDLP MLA for Foyle, Colum Eastwood.
Ms. Ni Chuilin was responding to Mr. Eastwood’s remarks in which he called on her to ‘stop misleading the people of Derry over funding she pledged for the Brandywell’.
The Minister said: “I am afraid in this instance, it is Mr Eastwood who is misleading the people of Derry.
“During Oral Questions on April 29 2014, Mr Eastwood asked me when the £2 million set aside for the Daisyfield development would be allocated and when were we likely to see work on the ground.
“In my response I said, that £2 million capital funding had been allocated, through Derry City Council, towards the project, which is part of the overall Foyle Valley Gateway Plan and which has a number of other partners.”
Minister Ni Chuilin went on to explain that the money made available for the Foyle Valley Gateway Plan is “completely separate” to any future development of Brandywell Stadium.
“I advised Mr Eastwood specifically that I had bid for the money through the October monitoring round and that this had been made available. As the lead partners in the project, Derry City Council have started the next stage of the project, which is the development of a business plan.
“At no stage did I link this £2 million funding to the development of the Brandywell Stadium. In fact, Brandywell is a completely separate issue which will form part of sub-regional stadia considerations in the future.”
