Sinn Féin West Tyrone MLA Michaela Boyle says that the announced go-ahead for the radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin Hospital will be met with jubilation in homes throughout Tyrone, Derry, Donegal and Fermanagh.
Ms Boyle said: “This announcement is a victory for all those who have tirelessly campaigned to secure this essential facility. I would particularly like to single out the campaigners from the local Daisy Chain Group in Strabane and the Pink Ladies in Derry who were powerful advocates outlining the debilitating ordeal that hundreds of local cancer patients have to undergo each year to access as little a ten minutes treatment at a time in either Belfast or Dublin.
“This decision will not only improve the quality of life for cancer sufferers into the future, improve chances of recovery and undoubtedly save lives.”
Ms Boyle said provision of the radiotherapy unit at Altnagelvin had been a strategic priority and central campaign issue for Sinn Féin over many years.
“This announcement represents a major milestone in terms of the planning and seamless provision of health care on an all-Ireland basis to the benefit of all,” the recently elected Assembly woman and outgoing Strabane Council chairperson said.
