Strathfoyle set for big community clean up

Young people from the Strathfoyle area of Derry are asking local people to lend support to a “Big Clean Up” of the estate.

The Big Clean Up, which gets underway at 11am this Saturday, has been organised by members of the ‘Strathfoyle Youth Club Heroes’ (SYCH) as part of their drive to improve the local environment.

SDLP councillor Gus Hastings says the young people should be commended for spearheading the initiative.

“I urge the community as a whole to come out and support the young people in their challenge.”

The Housing Executive and Derry City Council, as well as local schools, shops and community groups have also pledged their support for the venture.

The council will provide bin bags, litter pickers and special graffiti removal wipes, while on Friday they have organised a bulky lifts collection for any unwanted household items.

All aged between 12 and 16 the SYCH came up with the idea of cleaning the estate as part of their Youth Achievement Award
