SDLP MLA for Foyle, Mark H. Durkan, believes people living in Derry will benefit from an additional £1m in funding made available for the repair of street lighting in the North.
The announcement was made by Department for Regional Development Minister, Michelle McIlveen, at Stormont yesterday.
“In Derry, areas have been left without street lighting for weeks at a time and this is completely unacceptable - especially in these darker winter evenings,” said Mr. Durkan.
“I was happy to support the Minister’s bid for this funding as, without doubt, earlier decisions not to spend money on this vital service has caused anxiety, upset and anger in communities right across the North.”
He added: “My colleagues and I have been inundated with calls from residents concerned about community safety and road users concerned about road safety. I appreciate that the workers at Transport NI have been trying their best but they have not been adequately resourced to do their job.
“The Minister has said that the backlog of defective lights will be tackled with immediate effect and I would ask anyone with concerns about lighting in their area to let me or one of my SDLP colleagues know and we will happily make representation on your behalf.”
