An Inishowen student has been shortlisted for this year’s Eir Junior Spider Awards 2016.
Darragh Harkin, a Transition Year student at Buncrana’s Crana College, has been given the nod in the Giga Spiders Best Individual Project Category.
The teenager, from Drumfries, has been shortlisted for his talent in creating ‘Darragh’s TY Blog - My TY -Portfolio.’
Since 1996 the eir Spider Awards have honoured Irish individuals and organisations for their outstanding achievements online and celebrated the successes of the Irish internet and digital media. The eir Junior Spider Awards were then established in 2009 as a parallel programme for youths under the age of 19. The idea was originated by Business and Finance, working closely with the main sponsor eir.
The aim of these awards is to acknowledge the innovation amongst web creators under the age of 19; provide an exciting programme that will encourage youths under the age of 19 to further develop their technology skills in web design and act as a catalyst for those youths under the age of 19 who wish to pursue a career in this sector by providing access to influential business executives.
The talents of previous Junior Spiders winners have continued to garner recognition over the past year with the winners going on to achieve great success. Niamh Scanlon, the 2015 Mega Grand Prix winner has been named the European Union’s Digital Girl of the Year and is set to speak at InspireFest this June. The winner of the 2015 Giga Grand Prix prize, Kieran Horgan, has recently been selected to compete at this year’s All Ireland Programming Olympiad in DCU. While Jonathan White, winner of the 2015 Tera Grand Prix, has just won Best Overall Video at the Youth for Decent Work Awards for his video on safety in the workplace. Each age category is divided further across a range of 18 Awards, as well as each category having a Grand Prix winner to be revealed on the day.
This year’s awards will take place on Monday April 25th at Croke Park in Dublin.
Commenting on eir’s involvement in the Awards was John Anslow, Group Sponsorship eir.
He said: “The eir Junior Spiders Awards are a really exciting initiative that celebrates the most enquiring minds and best ideas out there. We’ve forever amazed at the calibre of entries and sheer hard work and creativity that goes into the entries. The fact that they come from some of the youngest and most talented people is really inspiring.”
