Student wins human rights essay competition

A Derry student has been awarded first place in a national essay writing competition.

Conal Fagan, 17, of St Columb’s College took first place in the Life Advocate Awards.

This was the inaugural year of the Life Advocate Awards which were set up to encourage research and critical-thinking on human rights and right to life issues.

Conal’s essay gave a thorough analysis of how society treats the most needy and outlined in detail the work of A&E departments, the Alzheimers Society, Simon Community NI, Foyle Search and Rescue and the United Nations. 

Last week Tyrone manager Mickey Harte presented the first prize to Conal, an avid footballer .

Thornhill College student Aoife Canning, 17, won second place and was presented with her award by members of the LifeWorks Education schools’ programme.
