Farren passed away in February after battling a brain tumour; he was 33 years-old.

The Mark Farren Subbuteo figure was created by Creggan based artist, Lawrence Watson.

Lawrence, who is originally from Belfast, made the figure after he received a special request from a local Derry City F.C. supporter.

“I was asked by a friend to make the Mark Farren piece - my friend is a huge Derry City Fan and he thought it would be a nice tribute to the great player Mark was,” said Lawrence.

Mark Farren is Derry City F.C.’s all time top goal scorer and his death resulted in mass outpouring of grief throughout Ireland.

“I think the last time Derry City and a Subbuteo player were mentioned together was when ‘The Undertones’ had one on the front cover of one of their singles.

“It was nice to do the Mark Farren piece knowing what he meant to Derry people,” said Lawrence.

Lawrence started making bespoke Subbuteo figures two months ago and since then the orders have started to flow in.

“I created a few pieces for the teams in the Republic of Ireland’s and Northern Ireland’s groups at the Euros and stuck them on my Twitter page. Then a friend asked me to do a piece documenting Eric Cantona’s kung-fu kick in 1995 - so far, I have sold five of these pieces.”

Subboteo was invented in 1946 and can be played by between two and four players; it was extremely popular in the 1970s and 80s.
