Proceeds from a ‘Summer Ball’ being held in Limavady will go towards helping others receiving treatment for cancer.

Gary Owens of Frank Owens bar in Limavady said along with his wife Dawn, and Frank Owens’ barman Davy McFarland, choosing the Sperrin Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital was an easy decision.

“It was after the success of the Valentine’s Ball that we thought we would do this. There are so many families in the area that are touched by cancer. I don’t think there is anyone who doesn’t have someone that belongs to them that hasn’t been affected,” said Gary.

The Sperrin Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital provides treatment to patients between Monday-Fridays. It is a purpose-built chemotherapy unit with 21 treatment chairs, an inpatient ward with 14 beds, an outpatient facility with nine consulting rooms and facilities for rehabilitation specialist palliative care and support services.

Patients can be in treatment for six months with weekly to three weekly visits to the unit for chemotherapy, according to the Western Trust.

The unit also provides a telephone triage service which is a 24 hour helpline for patients with chemotherapy/cancer complications this service is shared with the inpatient department to ensure 24-hour coverage.

Well known Limavady woman, Jennifer McLaughlin is a nurse in the Sperrin Unit.

“We’re delighted the Sperrin Room will benefit from the proceeds of the Ball,” said Jennifer. She said while her job can be stressful and emotional, she said she feels humbled to be be able to support those having treatment on their journey.

“It’s a really worthwhile cause because we all know someone who has been affected by cancer so, this is a great cause for people to get behind,” added Jennifer, who said she is known as the ‘Limavady Liaison nurse’.

Davy McFarland hopes the community will support the event.

“It’s for such a worthy cause and, if the money raised can make conditions that bit more comfortable - whether it’s to buy a television or a sofa - it’s a chance for people to help. It should be a good night and it’s for a worthy cause,” said Davy.

The summer ball in aid of the Sperrin Unit at Altnagelvin Hospital will take place at Frank Owens’ bar in the marquee on June 27th with food provided by Owen McLaughlin from The Point Bar.
