Sunderland sensation James McClean has become the latest high-profile sports star to back Derry’s City of Culture celebrations.
The 22 year-old winger signed for the Black Cats from Derry City during the summer and has made rapid progress at the North East club, making his first start in the win over Premiership leaders Manchester City on Sunday and scoring his first goal against Wigan on Tuesday night.
Having given a glimpse of his on-field prowess at the Stadium of Light, he’s intent on helping the City of Culture team achieve their goals for 2013.
The Creggan man is “delighted” to give his backing to the project, highlighting that sport is a major part of Derry’s culture. “The celebrations in 2013 are going to be amazing and like everyone else associated with the city I am really looking forward to seeing my home town have its year in the spotlight.
“There are so many talented people in Derry and its fantastic that in 2013 we are going to get the chance to show that to the world.”
