Classic Saturday Screenings continue at the Roe Valley Arts and Cultural Centre/ Ionad Ealaíon agus Cultúir Ghleann na Ró, Limavady through Autumn with some wonderful cinematic gems on the big screen.
The season launches with the amazing Sunset Boulevard on Saturday 6 September at 2pm. Often cited as one of the best American films ever made, this classic noir stars William Holden as an unsuccessful screenwriter who finds himself hopelessly attached to Norma Desmond (played immaculately by Gloria Swanson), a forgotten silent star, living in exile in her grotesque mansion, screening her old films and obsessively dreaming of a comeback.
The famous film critic Roger Ebert appointed the film into his ‘Great Movie’ Hall of Fame and described Gloria’s performance as ‘one of the greatest of all film performances’ and her character’s famous closing line: “There’s nothing else. Just us, and the cameras, and those wonderful people out there in the dark. All right, Mr. De Mille, I’m ready for my close-up.” as one of the greatest closing lines of all time.
The film won three Academy Awards in 1951 including Best Writing, Story & Screenplay and Best Art Direction. It won multiple Golden Globes the same year including Best Motion Picture and Best Motion Picture Director.
Sunset Boulevard is followed by the great 12 Angry Men on 11 October and festive cracker White Christmas on 20 December.
