‘Support those affected by suicide’ appeal

Local suicide prevention group Insight Inishowen is urging people across the peninsula to mark World Suicide Prevention Day on Tuesday next as a sign of support for those affected in any way by the tragedy of suicide.

Around the world people will light a candle in the window at 8pm to remember loved ones who have died through suicide and to combat stigma around this painful reality. A spokesperson for Insight Inishowen said: “We are encouraging people to participate in this simple and beautiful memorial.”

The group is also organizing a more intimate time for people bereaved or affected by suicide to gather at The Exchange, Castle Avenue, Buncrana. All are welcome from 7.00pm onwards to spend time together, to remember loved ones in a safe and caring environment, to light candles in the window and to help create a wall hanging of positive words for Insight Inishowen’s new community counselling room in The Exchange.

Refreshments will be provided.

The spokesperson pointed out Insight Inishowen has been working to prevent suicide in the area for almost five years through its counselling and family support services, education and training and by promoting community well being through events such as Feel Good Fortnight.
