Suspended sentence for Fleadh reveller

A Derry man who became aggressive to police while celebrating his birthday during the All Ireland Fleadh was given a five month suspended sentence at the city’s Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

Kevin Doherty, 27, of Derryview was arrested outside Sugar nightclub on August 19 last. Police had been called to Shipquay Street following reports that a male had fallen down some stairs and was being aggressive with the medical staff who were trying to help him.

When police warned him about his behaviour, he told them to “f*** off” and then headbutted a police officer in the jaw. The court heard that officer experienced a sharp pain in his jaw and through his teeth and suffered bleeding from his gums.

Doherty was subsequently arrested. A defence solicitor described the incident as “unfortunate” - saying his client had been celebrating his birthday and had consumed a lot of alcohol.

He said Doherty had very little memory of the events which had taken place on the night in question and emphasised that his aggression was not towards the medical personnel but at others at the seen.

The five month sentence was suspended for a period of two years by District Judge, Barney McElholm. Doherty was also ordered to pay £400 in compensation to the officer he had headbutted.
