A Derry mother has warned parents and children to be vigilant after her six year old daughter found a discarded syringe close to her home.
The mother, who asked not to be named, said her daughter had been playing in the Collon Lane area on Monday evening when she found the discarded item.
“They were playing hide and seek when she found the syringe. I was terrified when I found out and we took her, and the syringe, to Altnagelvin.”
The mother said her daughter was admitted overnight for observation and had to receive a hepatitis B vaccinationas well as undergo certain tests over the coming weeks.
“I wanted to speak out to warn parents to be aware and to warn their children not to touch such items if they find them.”
