A young girl was seriously assaulted in the Racecourse Road area of Derry in the early hours of yesterday morning, Police believe that sometime between 1.30am and 3am the 15-years-old female was assaulted by an unknown male in the area of Racecourse Road close to the Shantallow Estate. The male is described as being approximately 20-21 years old with a single upper tooth. He spoke with a local Derry accent and was wearing a red coloured hooded top with white stripes.

Condeming the incident, SDLP Councillor for the area, Angela Dobbins said: “This is an awful attack on a young girl which is supposed to have taken place inside the tunnel leading under the embankment. However, the description of this man is very detailed so somebody must know who he is.

“This attack also underpins why we need the Community Safety Wardens back on the streets without a death threat being held over them.

“Of course we will not know if they could have prevented this attack but this confirms how much they are needed.”

Detectives are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or anyone with any information about the incident to contact them at PSNI Serious Crime Branch on 028 3836 6274 or by calling the non-emergency number 101. Information can also be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
