The countdown to Temple has begun and the extraordinary art project will open to the public tomorrow, Saturday 14th March.

The final stages of the design and build have been a huge joint effort over six weeks, with more than one hundred individuals from across the local community working with David and his team on the project.

David Best and his Temple crew said, “We are honoured to be building this Temple with the Derry~Londonderry community.

“We’ve seen snow, we’ve seen rain, we’ve seen galeforce winds. It’s up and now it’s for the people of this city to come to it.

“Bring your worst fears or your saddest loss to leave behind in the Temple to burn, or celebrate the best thing that’s ever happened to you.

“It’s for everyone to use as they want, for healing, celebration and commemoration.”

The community engagement programme has included a full time training programme for up to 40 young unemployed people aged 18-24.

One of the youth apprentices working on the project is Karen, she said, “Second week here and I’m still buzzing. Every time I come to the workshop, it blows me away how much is getting done. The teamwork and camaraderie is great and it is exciting learning all the different techniques and processes involved.”

Twenty of the trainees will now take part in Temple Stories, a film project recording their own stories and experiences of working on and witnessing Temple, which will be directed by award-winning Derry-based filmmaker Margo Harkin, and her team.

Temple by David Best, produced by Artichoke, is open daily from midday-8pm from Saturday 14th-Friday 20th March at the Corrody Road Country Park (‘Kelly’s Field’), Bards Hill, Top of the Hill and is free during these dates.
