Strabane’s Alley Theatre have congratulated a young Castlederg school girl who took part in their ‘These Are Our Truths – Understanding Our Present’ project and went on to win a major Northern Ireland photographic competition.

Monika Zygadlo, a 16 year-old student from St Eugene’s High School has been crowned the Co. Tyrone Winner of the ‘Picturing Change’ competition launched by the Youth Justice Agency. The theme of the competition was ‘Picturing Change’ to see how young people saw the local community.

Monika explained: “I took pictures of the old cinema in Castlederg and the present cinema in Omagh to show how times have changed. I felt these pictures were perfect for the competition as it displays a contrast between old and new and shows how times have changed in the community”.

Last Friday, Monika went to Stormont to receive her award with her mum, best friend and her teacher from St Eugene’s High School, Mr McGovern.

“I didn’t expect to win at all as I just liked taking part and love photography, I definitely want to keep it up and hopefully it is something that I can carry through to my career,” Monika added.

Raymond McCarron, Strabane District Council, added: “We are very proud of Monika, during her project she was able to convey what it is like for young people to live in Strabane and she should feel very proud that her work has been recognized for this. Monika without a doubt has a bright future ahead of her in photography”.
