Fears were growing in the community of Burt yesterday as it is believed a number of cars were broken into in the car park of An Grianan Fort on Sunday afternoon.
It is believed five cars belonging to tourists visiting the historical site were targeted by the thieves.
A source close to the ‘Journal’ said the incident took place in board daylight and said there were a number of people in the area at the time of the theft.
It is believed the robbers “rifeled” through handbags in the cars before making their getaway. It is unknown at this stage how much was stolen from the visiting tourists.
Local Bridgend councillor Jack Murray described the people responsible as “thugs and hooligans”.
The young Sinn Fein councillor said their actions are anti-community.
“Much work has been done to promote Grianan of Aileach as a tourist attraction in Inishowen. The people responsible for this incident at the weekend are thugs and hooligans. Their actions are anti-community and I would encourage anyone with information which will be useful to the gardaí to come forward immediately.”
Colr Murray, who lives near-by in Birdstown, added that this activity was not common practice in the area and tourists and visitors should feel welcome to visit Grianan and should not be deterred from planning to visit.
“This activity is not common practice in Burt. Anyone planning to visit An Grianan fort should do so and should not be deterred by this disgraceful but rare incident.”
