Derry mum of three Deborah Dorrity has never taken part in the Foyle Hospice Female 5k before, but this year she will don her trainers and set out for a very special reason.
For it was the Foyle Hospice who cared for her beloved granny Ann in her last days earlier this year.
“I know this sounds awful but I never felt the need to do the walk before. I don’t think I ever really realised just what amazing work the Hospice do. This is my chance to give something back”
“I can’t say enough about the Hospice,” Deborah said. “They gave my granny dignity in her last days. She was able to spend those few days in comfortable surroundings, surrounded by her family and outside of a hospital.
“We all got to spend so much precious time with her before she died - and I’ll never forget what the Hospice did for my granny.”
Deborah said her granny’s death had left a huge hole in her life - which would never be filled. “Granny was like a second mammy to me. She helped raise me and I could go to her about anything and everything.
“You always knew she would give you the best advice and keep your secrets to herself.
“When I was young my mum had gone back to university and it was granny who helped take care of me and raise me.”
Like many Derry grannies, Deborah said her granny was the person who kept their whole family together and who everyone went to.
“She really was the centre of our family. We all went to her house every Sunday - and everything was always focused around her. We miss her so much.”
