The Council has confirmed that from January to May 2016 there were only three offences recorded in the city.

The figures for 2016 come against a backdrop of 321 littering offences recorded in Derry City from January 2012 to December 2015.

The Council has deployed litter wardens over recent years across the city as part of a crackdown on littering.

People can be fined £25, £50, £75 or £100 if the get caught discarding or disposing of rubbish improperly by throwing it on the street or in a public place instead of bins or other facilities.

Over that four year period, out of 301 summons issued, 116 people were successfully prosecuted.

In 101 cases, the summonses were withdrawn after people paid the fixed penalty fines when notified or on the morning of their scheduled Court appearance.

A further 42 summonses were “unable to be served”, the Council confirmed.

A spokesperson for Derry City and Strabane District Council said that littering and illegal dumping was an ongoing issue which demanded a high level of council resourcing.

She said: “Our cleansing teams work hard to keep on top of the issue but we would like to again appeal to the public to have due consideration when disposing of refuse and to dispose of it appropriately. “Council works closely with community figures and organisations to clamp down on problem areas, and we take action where possible to identify perpetrators and impose appropriate penalties in order to deter litterers.

“Council offers a wide range of recycling facilities throughout the district where the public can dispose of items responsibly, as well as operating a number of services such as bulky lift collections to assist with the removal of more cumbersome items. We also provide up to date information on our council website about the sorting and disposal of household waste which can be accessed at www.derrystrabane.com/waste recycling.”
