A Derry trade unionist has been appointed to one of Ireland’s most senior union positions.

Liam Gallagher was this week appointed the new chair of trade union Unite’s all-Ireland executive council.

“It is both an honour and a privilege to have been appointed to this position,” he told the ‘Journal’.

“I am aware of the many challenges that lie ahead in my three years as chair but I aim to do my best to represent all Unite members and to especially promote employment opportunities here in the north west.”

Mr Gallagher also revealed that Unite - Ireland’s second largest trade union - will hold their conference in Derry next year.
