Traffic disruption is continuing to cause chaos this evening along the old Letterkenny Road in Derry, with army technical officers at the scene of a security alert in the area.

The Letterkenny Road has been closed at its junction with the Lonemoor Road and the Mullenan Road. The Braehead Road has also been closed at its junction with the Letterkenny Road and the Crevagh Road.

SDLP candidate for The Moor, Dermott Henderson said the alert has caused serious disruption for motorists in and around the border area.

Speaking from the scene of the alert at Braehead Road, Mr Henderson said there had been intense police activity in the area since early afternoon.

He said: “A number of roads have been closed and people are being advised to avoid the area so it has caused serious disruption and inconvenience for people, especially for drivers of heavy goods vehicles who would travel through this area on their way to Donegal.

“The alert is continuing and, with rush hour, the disruption will only get worse. People in this city are fed up with security alerts and some of the people I have spoken with today are annoyed this has happened again. There has been a lot of police activity on the ground since the afternoon and the police helicopter was deployed earlier. Army bomb disposal experts are here currently. We all hope the situation can be resolved safely and quickly.”

Sinn Fein representative Liam Friel condemned those responsible for the disruption.
