Council reject Earhart airport plans

Derry City Councillors have given the thumbs down to a move that would have seen the city’s airport named in honour of aviatrix Amelia Earhart.

The motion, proposed by Sinn Fein’s Elisha McCallion, was opposed by the SDLP, UUP and DUP members of the local authority at a meeting on Tuesday.

The Journal’s online readers had given the move their backing via our weekly poll - with 75% of voters saying honouring Earhart, who landed at Ballyarnett in 1932 following her transatlantic flight, was a shrewd move.
