A woman has been airlifted to hospital following a three-vehicle crash on the Glenshane Road between Derry and Belfast.

Belfast-bound traffic is currently being diverted in Dungiven and Derry-bound traffic is being diverted at the bottom of Glenshane Pass via Maghera.

A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service said the woman’s injuries were “very serious”. A number of others were also injured in the crash, which took place on the Glenshane Pass near the Ponderosa public house, just outside Dungiven.

A PSNI spokesman said at lunch-time: “The road is expected to remain closed for several more hours while police conduct a full and thorough investigation into the exact circumstances of the collision.”

The Western Trust had earlier asked people not to attend Altnagelvin Hospital’s Emergency Department ‘unless necessary’ as it is very busy.

The Emergency Department at the hospital had been awaiting admissions from the road traffic collision.

A major incident had not been declared but the hospital’s Emergency Department is expected to be very busy for a period of time, and people have been asked not to attend unless necessary.
