Inishowen Rural Transport (IRT) is seeking volunteer drivers for its new social transport scheme.
Cormac Skinnader, the group’s co-ordinator, explained IRT aims to fill the transport gaps facing Inishowen people.
He said: “The social transport scheme is designed to provide people with lifts to pre-arranged, non-emergency medical appointments. We are currently seeking to recruit volunteer drivers who will pick people up at their homes, take them to their appointments, possibly in Letterkenny General Hospital, and bring them home again. The drivers will be reimbursed their fuel and parking costs.
“The social transport scheme would provide a life-line for people who live alone and do not drive. It would also be great for those with family members who are unable to take time off work.
It is essential prospective volunteer drivers have clean driving licences. They will also be garda vetted.
If anyone is interested in volunteering, they should contact me on 0879861606 or Noreen on 0749322291.”
